It’s 1:51am and still can’t sleep. More thoughts are running through my head.
I don’t think twitter is toxic as people claim it to be. They don’t like Musk and refuse to use the platform and use Bluesky which is the exact same thing but the difference is that the smartest people are on X.
I spent some time following the people and accounts that I’m interested in. Constantly unfollowing if I lose interest. Accounts lead me to other accounts to follow. I’m constantly fine-tuning my feed.
Mostly my feed is movie and rap related and a small percentage is current affairs stuff.
But the problem I think is that although the smartest people are on it and the best ideas are on that platform. It’s not just twitter but all of social media. It’s all addicting. You might be following inspiring people but sometimes you can end up spending hours reading and retweeting positive stuff but you aren’t actually doing anything with your life.
I was reading Murakami’s latest novel The City and Its Uncertain Walls right before writing this. I thought, Murakami doesn’t have any social media presence at all. His publishers handle his marketing but he himself isn’t posting or doing livestreaming.
I doubt he has an anonymous twitter or note.com account checking out what’s happening on the internet. Current affairs or pop culture don’t seem to interest him.
Is it possible to still be relevant or make a living with very minimal social media presence?
I think I want to quit X not necessarily cause of the toxic nature but because you can curate a near perfect feed that will keep you on the platform consuming tweets and short clips but never really doing anything with your life.
Quitting social media will definitely keep your out of the loop but it doesn’t make you stupid.
You do feel left out if you don’t hear the latest gossip about politics and celebrities.
But in order to produce quality work, you have to shut these channels keep it to a minimum and really go out there and live life.
That’s kind of why I have an interest in the blogging platform and think that it’s peak internet. You can get your message across without analytics on how your tweet did. There’s not following you need to build. It’s just pure writing and worrying about getting your message and your thoughts across.
I deactivated my instagram, nothing bad happened from doing that. I’m shooting a lot more than usual instead of scrolling on my bed. Might experiment and quit twitter for a bit.
