A Better Tomorrow (1986)

Love how AMC is bringing back the classics. They’re now doing Hong Kong Classics. Some of the Hong Kong titles I’ve seen in the Criterion Channel and to be honest I never delved too much into Hong Kong films yet. I honestly don’t know why and don’t have a good reason and now I’m mad at myself for not having started sooner.

Tonight I watch John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow (1986). I was a little intimidated if I was even going to be able to catch up with the dialogue cause they talked so fast and when I was halfway reading through the subtitles, the next subtitle lines showed up.

There is something to be learned from the editing. When you are conscious of the editing it breaks the flow of a film. In this case, I was conscious of the editing in a good way.

I don’t really know how to make a movie review. Every time I see a film review on a website or a blog they summarize the entire film which even though are non-spoilers, I think a viewer should go in cold to have the purest experience possible.

As of now, if I write about a movie I’m not going to mention much about the plot.

From the very beginning you see Mark, played by Chow Yun Fat, and all his mannerisms. He’s not just acting with just the lines but using physical behavior to make the role feel like a real human being. Watching him play this roles actually makes it look fun to act memorizing lines and playing with props and utilizing everything to make the character feel real.
