It’s really hard to self-motivate sometimes. Easy to go back to your lazy ways. If you have New Years’ Resolutions most people are giving up now. What’s really helped with my goals is writing those goals I want to achieve and making sure I see it every day. Don’t write in a notebook, cause you close it, and you might forget to open it up. What’s really helped are sticky notes. Write those goals and any weird crazy thoughts on them and post them somewhere where you’re going to see them everyday. In my case, I have a mirror and sink in my room that I use in the morning and night to wash my face and brush my teeth. Every time I’m at that mirror I’m looking at the messages my past self is telling me to do. You can’t ignore it. I’ll put some pictures of what I mean maybe in the future. For example I have a sticky note that says
Did You:
Write down how much you spent?
Check your weight?
Fast AT LEAST 16 hours?
There was one other thing I put on it but don’t remember.
Sticky notes are your best friend, they don’t damage your wall, put them everywhere. As you look at it every day, it keeps you on the path your trying to stay on. When you try to keep your goal inside your head you have to keep using your mental energy to remember these goals. It sounds stupid cause whatever goals you have might sound simple enough that you feel like there’s no way you’re going to be able to forget. But you’ll be surprised how easily your mind gets distracted and forgets the goals like that. When you write your goals down on a sticky note, you’re automating and offloading the idea from head to the physical world. So instead of having to remember what you have to do, it’s there on your mirror and now you have time to think of other things to think about.
That was my problem, I always kept my goals inside my head for example: I’m going to try to spend less which works the first two days but the third or fourth day, the you that’s so used to fast food and snacking comes back to the forefront and you go back to your old ways again.
Writing those goals down on sticky notes have been the most helpful thing. Another thing that’s helped has been blogging the experience and the journey here on my website and on X. When you write here or on X for people to see, it makes you more accountable with what you’re doing. I’m trying to post something everyday even if it’s an unimportant story. I think when you stop writing, you’re making it easy for yourself to go back to your lazy habits. But I won’t know if there’s a direct correlation between writing and my success until a couple more weeks.
