Bought David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986)
The Criterion Collection are doing their 50% off Flash Sales through Barnes & Noble bookstore. Because I already subscribe to the Criterion Channel, I only buy physical movies of films that aren’t on their streaming services. The only reason I would get a physical copy when it’s already on their streaming service, is if it’s a favorite of mine and they have extra features such as director + cast commentaries.
Originally I was going to get Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but right when I was going to check out, I had a feeling that the film wasn’t going to be that worth it. I still want to watch it, as I’ve already read the book but I think I made a good decision to wait a little bit later.
The sale has been going on for almost a week and a half so a lot of the good films were already taken.
When I brought my eyes back to the top shelf to the A and B section that’s when I saw David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986). To be honest, the two David Lynch films that I saw from start to finish was Mulholland Drive (1999 or 2001) and A Straight Story (1999) (the most straightforward of Lynch’s films). One time I tried to watch Inland Empire (2006) but quit after the first half. I wasn’t ready for it, like I was accidentally put into an advanced-level language class. The cinematic language of Lynch is still foreign to me and haven’t seen any films that helped me prepare for his use of non-linear narratives and the half-remembered dream / nightmare quality to them.
I thought that buying this film would be a good start to try and understand the world of David Lynch.
Here are some photos I took of the Criterion Collection edition.
Really curious with this has to do with the film…
A reason to get the physical copies: The Essay Booklet…

Still trying to decide whether to watch it in the daytime or late late at night. Will have to consult with my dog what time she’s available, she won’t allow me to eat the bowl of popcorn by myself.
