We Should All Be Blogging

Everyone should should own a piece of the web and own their own website or write a blog. You may not think that you're interesting enough for people to read your stuff. You think that you're not interesting enough to gain people’s attention. Even if less than five people read your blog post, keep writing into the void, you have nothing to lose.

We should all blog or have some kind of personal portfolio. Why? Because that is our real resume. With your own blog or website, you're publishing content and documenting your experience. Through that we get to see the best side of you, the things that you are so interested in that you're putting in this effort to share it publicly online for strangers to read.

People have a professional CV, and it might list in fine detail your work experience but it doesn't show me shit about you. It doesn’t show me the true you that makes you you. Companies hire someone because they have a good resume but when you meet that person in the office they tend to be the most boring people you've ever met. Resumes-building and the interview process is so superficial. But if you took a look through a person’s website or blog, it would cut through all the bullshit and we get to see exactly what kind of person you are and how you think. By looking at what you've published and re-blog, we get to do less guess work on your true opinion of something and leads to deeper conversation.

Buy your own domain. Making your own website is pretty easy these days with Squarespace and Wix. It's not that expensive or you can make a simple website for free using gumroad.com. Or use X, Tumblr, Flickr, Substack etc. and write away and share a link on all the social media platforms that you’re on. But I would say get a website cause instagram and tiktok might be convenient to promote your work now but it’s not going to be the most popular app forever and then you’re going to have to move all your content to the next popular app.

Maybe the people who know you on social media will be confused why you're doing this all of a sudden. Don't worry about if your current followers don't read your stuff. By writing and leaving your digital door open, you're welcoming a new opportunity to meet your next best friend or creative collaborator. Maybe it’ll help you find the community that you were meant to be a part of.

One of my favorite stories was about how Travis Scott was inspired by what producer Noah "40" Shebib wrote on the OVO blog. He wrote how you didn't need the most expensive equipment to record music, listed the budget friendly essentials to record. Young Travis found that blog post, showed it to his mom and convinced her that this is what he needed to start recording his music. The first time Travis met 40, he thanked him for writing that blog post.

Someone might've been looking for a blog post about a certain topic and you might be the first person to finally write about it. Don't wait for someone to write the blog post that you want to read or the Youtube video you want to watch. Make that small contribution and create it yourself. You may have a small following but people are waiting for your blog post that no one else is going to write.

I found this video very inspiring to start your own blog or owning your own website.
